Samantha Bee had one last episode of her satirical news show “Full Frontal” before Election Day, and she used it to try to put some momentum behind Hillary Clinton. After a bit about how Hillary Rodham went from being a fierce feminist to a more traditional wife and mother, Bee turned her attention to the scandal that has dogged Clinton throughout her campaign: the emails.
Bee first attacked WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, calling him a “heroic transparency fetishist who refuses to tell Swedish authorities whether or not he raped someone,” then she moved on to the emails themselves. She joked about Donna Brazile’s leaked debate questions — “Oh really, Donna? Someone at the Flint town hall is going to ask about Flint? Great use of a leak, Dumbthroat” — and the fact that many of the messages were simply Clinton and her top aide Huma Abedin asking each other if they were still awake.
Bee cherry-picked a few others, emails in which Clinton expressed interest in helping a child bride from Yemen and a doctor in need of supplies in Haiti. The messages reveal the “real Hillary,” Bee claimed: “a tech-averse workaholic.”
Then the host invited Sarah Paulson to the studio to do a dramatic reading of some of the leaked messages. Paulson, who won an Emmy this year for her role in the FX series “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” took the stage in a “nasty woman” T-shirt and proceeded to deliver a one-woman show made up entirely of snippets from Clinton’s missives. Most of them included the phrase “Pls print.” Other stand-outs included, “Here’s my question: on this new [Black]berry, can I get smiley faces?” and “Can you give me times for two TV shows? ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘The Good Wife.’ ” The entirety of one email was: “Gefilte fish. Where are we on this?”
